Waterkeepers Bahamas (WKB) is thrilled to announce the winners of its 2023 Summer Essay Competition. This year’s essay competition, in honour of The Bahamas’ 50th year of Independence, focused on analyzing the strides made in environmental protection and sustainable practices while also questioning the feasibility of The Bahamas reaching its ambitious 30 by 30 targets by 2030. 

After a meticulous evaluation process, the esteemed panel of judges selected the following winners in three categories:

Primary Division 

Amelia Francis

St Francis & Joseph Primary School

Junior Division

Iyah Eden Rolle

Lyford Cay International School

Senior Division

Aalysha Rolle

St Anne’s School

All three winners received cash and gift cards. The Summer Essay Competition not only recognizes the achievements of these outstanding students but also emphasizes the importance of nurturing environmental consciousness among our youth. Their insights will undoubtedly inspire discussions and actions that contribute to The Bahamas’ ongoing journey towards sustainability.

“It is vital that we provide a platform for young minds to engage with pressing environmental issues and envision a sustainable future. The depth of understanding and passion displayed by the participants this year is truly impressive,” said Rashema Ingraham, Executive Director of Waterkeepers Bahamas. 

She continued, “As we celebrate 50 years of Independence, it’s inspiring to witness the next generation’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and shaping a more sustainable future. These young minds give us hope and remind us of the urgent need to work together to protect our natural heritage.”
