Mangrove Mania
Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Dorian on our coastal ecosystems, Waterkeepers Bahamas has been unwavering in our commitment to restoring mangroves. These crucial plants are essential for coastal protection, fish nurseries, and carbon sequestration. In Dover Sound and East Grand Bahama, our team has planted tens of thousands of mangroves to stabilize coastlines and replenish marine habitats.
Our mangrove restoration efforts have been a powerful capacity-building exercise made possible by the crucial role of our community partners. Their involvement has been instrumental in collecting mangrove propagules (seeds), potting, growing, and eventually outplanting these vital plants. More than a dozen schools across Grand Bahama, New Providence, and the Family Islands have participated in our initiatives, fostering a deep connection and commitment to environmental conservation among young Bahamians.
Our mangrove nursery, located at Conservation Cove, serves as an outdoor classroom, attracting dozens of weekly visitors. Here, they learn about the fascinating journey from seed to plant and have the opportunity to pot or care for the mangroves themselves. This interactive experience is invaluable in fostering a sense of stewardship and responsibility for our environment.
Mannie the Mighty Mangrove
Our work with mangroves has also inspired educational outreach by publishing our book, “Mannie the Mighty Mangrove.” This book aims to educate children and adults alike on the importance of mangroves, promoting awareness and understanding of these crucial ecosystems.
